The journey of our lives are circular as each year passes through its annual events: New Year’s Eve, Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July and so on. We lean forward to the next big thing and when it is over we are consoled that the next big thing is on its way. Church life also has some circularity to it: one Sunday leads to the next, one Christmas Eve to the next, one Easter Sunday to the next. There is comfort to the recurring nature of life over the course of a year.
Long before I was actually able to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain, I was captured by the concept of a spiritual journey that had a different destination than the starting point. This may be a less comforting metaphor for some. Each day of a journey can be very different and there is no reassurance about what is next. On the road traveling companions come but they also go, mountains must be climbed with valleys in between, and there is no neat and tidy way to proceed. Sort of like the life Jesus called his disciples to choose.
This benediction, in the spirit of St. Patrick, expresses a part of my heart as I say goodbye. Sure I could have stayed longer-for another Oktoberfest or Christmas Eve or Men’s Retreat or sermon series or wedding, funeral, graduation, or cup of coffee and a donut. I have loved sharing 20 circles around the sun with you at Advent. But a little while back, God whispered to me, “You’ve been saying that faith is an adventure. Maybe it’s time for you to go on another adventure.” No sooner did he say that than one appeared. I will pray this blessing for you and I ask one thing, please pray for me and my family too. And know this, we will meet again.
