Hello Advent Family,

Have you ever had an enemy? Not merely someone who didn’t like you or who you didn’t get along with, but someone who was actively working toward your destruction. It can be unnerving to think that someone is doing that but the Bible reminds us that, in fact, we all have an enemy. Satan is at work to attack us. Let’s look together at I Peter 5 today.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Peter tells us to be alert, be ready for the attack. He tells us to resist and stand firm and that God, Himself, will make us strong, firm, and steadfast. That means not only do we have an enemy, but more importantly an ally. If God is with us we can stand up to anything that Satan may throw at us. To me that gives so much confidence. It’s like going into battle knowing we have already won. The key for us is to lean into God’s strength and not try to rely on our own. When we fight alone we will inevitably fail at times but when we lean into God’s strength we will overcome.

In His Grip,
